The no-nonsense kind of teacher

My wife is a teacher at a Catholic school. My wife is just a little over 5 foot tall and still yet a giant. She fights for what she knows is right and sticks to her convictions. She sets high standards and high expectations - for EVERY student. She doesn’t accept average for any of them. When I say average, I am not talking about the school’s average but instead about what the average would be for each individual measured at their own personal capabilities. She will expect from you not to give only 50 or 80 percent but 100%.

She is a no-nonsense kind of woman and doesn’t beat around the bush. She doesn’t accept defeat and giving up is not in her vocabulary. The students hate her - at first.

Because when the school year starts and they come to her class they are afraid, afraid of the unknown, afraid of the high standards, fearful of being challenged. They are worried they have to grow and become a better version of themselves - why? Because some of them might have never been tested like this before.

What most students or parents don’t know my wife is a Karate instructor. She has been training in Karate for over 30 years, and this is what makes her the kind of person she is.

When people hear Karate, then they think of kicking and punching and loud yelling but what people do not see and do not know about is that Karate is a system for the individual to self-develop and self-cultivate.

In Karate you learn to focus, concentrate and control your emotions above average. You learn to push yourself, not to accept defeat and to get back on your feet no matter what. You also learn that fighting is never the answer. You are taught understanding, love, care, and empathy.

My wife is a 5th-degree black belt and somebody who has internalized this system of self-development and self-self-cultivation will automatically apply it to anything else - including her work.

She will push the students to their personal limits, this time just intellectually. She will not accept their defeat, even if that means she has to switch strategies in her approach towards the student, she will come up with a new and different plan, and won't quit on the student.

Just how it is in the martial arts way, she does it with strictness, is demanding and challenging but also with love, empathy, and understanding.

Slowly the students (and parents) see the growth, recognize their own potential and enjoy the way of self-development and start to love her. They have overcome. Once this point is reached the student appreciates the teacher. The student understands what kind of conviction, empathy but also compassion to help went into the students' development.
