The mindset that will prevent you from                         accomplishing great things

When we were toddlers, we learned the basic skills for toggling through life through constant incidental practice. We didn’t learn how to walk in a classroom. We just kept falling on our butts and getting up.

It is also the same way nobody taught us how to grab stuff with our tiny little hands. Instead, we played clumsily with our chubby little fingers till we got the hang of it.

There was no way we could be scared of the most difficult of tasks because in our subconscious we knew that everything just needed practice.

I don’t know if nature plays a trick on us and leaves us hanging once we learn the “basics” or if it is society and life that gets to us. Somehow, as we get older, after we learn the ‘basics of living life,’ somewhere between the ages of 5 and 7, we lose that ‘unstoppable mindset” and that vast tapestry of confidence that made us believe that we could accomplish anything by just practicing. NOTHING was complicated, we just knew we needed practice.

Let’s switch scenario for a second. Imagine a figure skater performing his or her routine effortlessly. So graceful, so relaxed without even breaking a sweat, gliding on the ice, flying through the air…

“Effortless” does not exist.

Effortless is the result of endless hours of practice - the science of human research mentions a number between 8,000 to 10,000 hours to get to expert status - or what we can call effortless.

One of the greatest soccer players of all time, Lionel Messi said this:
“it took 17 years, 3 months and 22 days for me to become an overnight success.”

He was implying that it took him 17 years of constant, repetitive and often times, monotonous training to become the world-famous star that he is now.

Now let me ask you this if somebody has to train that many hours, do you really think it was effortless for 10,000 hours? Do you really think you can train for 10,000 hours and never fall on your butt, be knocked down, have setbacks, doubts, injuries, tears, blood, and sweat???

Of course not.

Regardless, we still do not accept the fact that nothing comes easy at the first try. It is this exact mindset that will prevent us from accomplishing great things.

It is a painful realization eh? Yes, I know. But now, you are fine because you are not like most people. You do not accept defeat. You want to be successful and accomplish great things. In fact, you want to take action because NOBODY can tell you that you can’t or won’t do it.

That’s great!

If you want the tools needed to accomplish great things, you need to put yourself into an environment that would challenge you and raise your level of awareness and consciousness. Thus, demanding nothing but your best.

Where is this environment? You might think it’s your science club, but it isn’t. Yes, joining a science club will challenge you intellectually but what about the rest that is needed to make you successful and inspire you to do great things?

Where do you learn grit, perseverance, focus, empathy, leadership and how to overcome hesitations or worse fear? Sorry to break it to you, but your science club might only be one piece of the puzzle, and I am afraid it might be the smaller piece.
