Be the Captain of your Ship
Ever heard the inspirational quote, “When writing the story of your life, don’t let anyone else hold the pen.”
Okay then let me add this. “it isn’t just about not allowing anyone else to hold the pen, own the pen! Take it and make it yours!
The way we live our lives can be compared to us sailing on a boat in the ocean. We would be faced by winds and turbulent waves (obstacles) that battle hard against our boats.
For some people, this boat keeps sailing blindly on the ocean without any definite direction. While for others, this boat seems to have a course and is sailing in a direction.
Some people sail their boats towards an island called “Normal Island.” This is where you get a house, a car and a two-week vacation every year.
While for others the boat sails towards “Paradise Island,” where they get multiples of what anybody else is getting.
In which boat would you rather be?
It is doubtful that you would choose the boat heading towards “Normal Island.” So “Paradise Island it is.
Let me ask you another question.
Who is the captain of your boat?
You know the answer to this question. It is YOU!
How come that your boat is not sailing to paradise island? You probably did everything you were told to do. You went to school and got your (college) degree.
Well, the answer is that we were all taught to autopilot to “Normal Island.” We are taught to keep ourselves limited with what we can achieve. Why would the “owners of paradise island” share their paradise with you?
Let’s take a look at those actually living on paradise island. Usually, the inhabitants of paradise island are high achievers.
These are people who have learned to harvest their own energy and that they can set the sails in a way that their ship sails to paradise island. Sure, some of the inhabitants got to paradise island because of a grandfather or great grandfather who sailed the boat there. Still, someone in their family had to figure out how to get there and so the family never had to leave.
So how do YOU learn to sail to paradise island? The answer is simple – it is about implementing the extra-skills, and this is part of the reason why only a few make it to that island. It requires that you learn and master some supplementary skills that will get you to be a master of your own sailboat.
I am not talking about how to sail your boat with autopilot, because that is what we all learn at school. I am talking about how to sail against the waves, the storms, and the obstacles.
This is because though “Normal Island” has those, it can be reached by autopilot. However, Paradise island needs manual steering because the winds, storms, and obstacles are much bigger, harder to overcome and therefore harder to reach.
What are those skills you must master?
There is the skill of faith. You must truly believe in yourself. You must have unwavering faith. This faith can come from anywhere. It can spark up within you, or it can be sparked through your religious beliefs. But it must be there.
You must have commitment, not just 50% commitment like most of us. Not the 50%-nice-weather-kind-of-commitment but the 100%-stormy-weather-kind-of-commitment.
You must have focus and perseverance. So that even if the waves push you back to the shore of where you started, you have the perseverance and persistence to set sail to paradise island again and again.
You must stay on course and on target even though the winds sometimes blow you in a different direction.
You must gain confidence, learn leadership skills and become such an inspiration that you can get other sailors on your boat to help you when needed.
Where do you go to learn such skills?
As I stated earlier, these skills are not learned in schools. They can be however learned through Martial Art training.
