The benefits of Martial Arts Training: Confidence, Self-esteem, Focus, Commitment, Determination, Perseverance, Goal Setting, Goal achievement, Leadership Skills, Self-discipline, Integrity.

Sports should be an essential part of any child’s development but the question many parents often ask is what sports should kids participate in. For some kids, they pretty much have the natural talents for a particular sport and seem to settle there while for others, they may need to try out a few things.

In my opinion, traditional Martial Arts provide a far more preferable option for child sports when compared to many of the team sports that take place in school. The benefits of Martial Arts for kids cannot really be overemphasized and they include some of the following:

Parental Involvement Is Encouraged. At Tokon Martial Arts, a dojo I have run for over seven years with my wife, we offer Martial Arts classes for both adults and children. This helps families bond as they have a common activity around which everyone can participate in or watch each other’s sessions too. And if you have the proper space for it, you can even continue practicing with each other at home.

Everybody Gets to Play: One advantage that Martial Arts have over team sports is that everyone is encouraged to participate regardless of how far they are from mastery. In team sports or competitive events, there is only a limited number of children that can get to be on the team, so the more physically developed and character development are prioritized leaving the late bloomers to sit it out on the bench without any attention.

In traditional Karte, every kid has a chance to take part as the mat is big enough for everyone. So, the mats are packed full and the benches are empty as everyone gets an equal amount of time to train. Trainers and instructors also ensure that late bloomers are tutored at their own pace, eliminating the need for external competition as a drive for success.

It helps build confidence: With every new move or skill your child masters in their Karate training, you will instantly see an increase in their overall confidence. Achieving the goals they set out for themselves and receiving recognition for that increases children’s self-esteem and the way they view themselves, and this, in turn, helps them to do better in their school work and everyday activities.

It helps to sharpen the mind and develop focus: A common issue many parents face is getting their children to focus on one task at a time. This is almost impossible because of the myriad of activities that exist to distract them.

In order to truly master any skill, a lot of mental energy, focus, and internal discipline must be applied. Luckily for them, this is another trait that they can take from our Martial Arts school (dojo) and apply to their everyday lives.

I believe in sports and I believe that children should be given the best opportunity to participate in the sport that pays off the highest returns in the future. If you would love to see how Martial Arts can help your children, come visit us at Tokon Martial Arts in Sacramento.
