Sempai Maryann Salvador is a 4th-degree black belt with the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) and a 4th-degree black belt with the International KarateCoaching Federation (IKCF).
Unlike most students, my karate journey began as an adult alongside my teenager. Six months later, my two younger children joined the dojo, so it became a family affair. It was a childhood aspiration of mine to learn Karate, and to train with my kids was just the icing on the cake. Many years of hard work and training have seen us progress through the black belt rank. In October 2019, I earned my 4th degree Black Belt. Almost 18 yrs since I started, I feel I have a lot more to learn, so no one can ever be too old to start Karate. I feel it is important to learn self defense, a survival skill, especially for women.

Sempai Brad Quon is a 3rd-degree black belt with the International KarateCoaching Federation (IKCF).
I was inspired by the 1980s martial arts movies, the icon Bruce Lee, and the Karate Kid and as a result, started my journey in Shotokan karate. I advanced to black belt by middle school and was able to compete in national events on the NBL and NASKA circuits in high school. I hung up my gi during my college years and life took over in my early 20s. Fast forward 25 years, I found my gi and old belt (which seemed to have shrank a bit) and Tokon Martial Arts and restarted, this time with my wife and two boys, Jordan and Justin. I have been able to regain the competitive spirit and medal multiple times at the US Open and National Championships. I am currently a 2nd Dan in Shotokan karate and looking to strengthen my foundation as a karateka. As an athlete, sempai, Coach to other athletes in the dojo, and a fellow proud and supportive parent, I'm grateful that karate has come full circle into my life.
Sempai Timmy Lockwood is a 2nd-degree black belt with the International KarateCoaching Federation (IKCF).
My name is Sempai Timothy. I teach at Tokon martial arts. I have a second degree black belt. I’m just 16 and still in high school. After school, I go to Tokon and I help teach all ages, ranging from 4 to 40. I love Tokon martial arts because the head teachers help teach the kids how to be disciplined and be self-aware of themselves. When I was 5 it was just me and my mom, so she had me start karate. At that time, I was getting into a lot of trouble at school because of my anger, and I always needed to be moving during class. But when I joined Tokon, I was able to control my anger and jittery movements after a year. Plus, there are a lot of social events happening at the dojo so you get to see the head instructors and other students in a normal atmosphere. Since I have been teaching the little kids, I’ve been able to see what they do wrong and reflect on what I do and fix it. The kids have so much fun, and so do I. Some of the kids, when they came for their first trial didn’t even want to leave their parents’ side before joining the class, but now they love coming to the dojo. I am a 16-year-old with my second-degree black belt helping the ages 4-40 learn how to do karate.
Sempai Maya Bustamante is a 2nd-degree black belt with the International KarateCoaching Federation (IKCF) and a 1st-degree black belt with the International Shotokan Karate Federation.
I started karate fairly early, at 6 years old. I started with Sensei Christina’s father - Sensei Emile. At the time, most of my friends were in karate, so as a 6-year-old, I decided I wanted to hop on the bandwagon. I ended up getting so much more out of this experience than I ever would’ve thought. After about 3 years, Sensei Emile’s dojo was closed down, and all his students were sent to Tokon. This is where I would train from now on and become a part of their dojo family. There were many rough patches in my karate journey, especially as I started competing and getting higher in belt ranks, and there were MANY times I wanted to quit. Sensei Marcus and Sensei Christina’s unwavering support through the years is what kept me going. In 2021, I received my 1st-degree black belt with the International KarateCoaching Federation at age 11 and a year later, with the International Shotokan Karate Federation. Now, I am a second-degree black belt, testing for my 3rd next year, and the Sensei’s have given me my first job working here! I absolutely love working for them and training under them. The staff AND students here are so nice and supportive and I am forever grateful to be able to share this part of my life with them!
