          Why going the extra mile counts

Sometime during the Second World War, a cargo ship got hit by a torpedo and sank in the North Sea, leaving several of its crew to fight for survival in a lifeboat. One of the crew members describe a curious incident that took place shortly after;

“There were seven of us on the lifeboat boat, but the third officer passed on barely two hours before we were rescued. He was very dejected and apparently lost heart and just gave up and died.”

This true-life story paints a picture that is all too common in our society today. Many people do not realize that there’s a tipping point when success or victory really starts to happen for anyone. Usually, this point is after they have put in between 90 to 100% of the work! So how come only a few people are really successful? The answer is shockingly simple. Because most people quit after giving only 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% or even 89% of their efforts.

Most of the time, people are not necessarily missing the skillset required in their field. What they are missing is something that goes with that skillset. An additional factor that is many times is more important, a vital emotional element that converts the skill into success. It is the extra motivation, the extra confidence, the extra focus, concentration, perseverance, the “get up after you have been knocked down” attitude!

Having the skill, even if those skills are outstandingly well, even if they are ingenious and beyond if the person does not have the right attitude and required commitment, success won’t come!

If I possess the best athletic skills in the world but I cannot overcome my self–doubt, my lack of confidence, my anxiety, then I will never be successful! All of a sudden, my attitude – that additional factor needed – will be the deal breaker that puts everything on hold, even my ingenious skills.

If I am a math genius, hired by the NASA to calculate the probabilities of a trip to the sun, but I am too shy and scared to make my presentation in front of the other scientists in my team – then my math skills count for nothing. Or what if I am the sales person that can’t lead my sales team because I lack the confidence to speak up to new people?

In all these examples, the missing skillset had nothing to do with the actual professional skillsets, but with that essential mental attitude and commitment. When the attitude is correct, and commitment is 100%, success can and will definitely come!

The problem is our educational system only takes care of our “professional skillset.”  We are taught Math, English, Science and any other subject. However, when was the last time you had a Commitment lesson or an Attitude 101 class?

Oops, those courses don’t exist, do they? Our school system does not offer those classes.

I am not sure why maybe because the powers in charge do not want too many people that can achieve their own success because of a can-do attitude; people who are ready to give a 110% in commitment and character? The painful reality is that there is no place in our education system; you can go to learn those additional skills that are actually the key to your success.

Now, you are probably thinking of the way out for you.

Well, what if I told you there is actually a place you can go to learn those skills? A place like this is called a Dojo and Dojos have been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Unfortunately, most people just don't know about them and if they have joined one probably haven’t paid attention to the more profound truths they are being taught there. Sometimes the teacher might not even fully understand it himself.

My name is Sensei Marcus Hinschberger. My wife Christina and I are the owners of a traditional Karate Dojo called Tokon Martial Arts. Some consider us an authority when it comes to self–development for children and adults alike. We have taught literally thousands of students around the world how to build a lifestyle of 100% commitment, and a "never give up attitude and mindset."

By emphasizing strength, confidence, fearlessness, and perseverance, we teach our students to walk the extra mile, so they learn how to succeed in any endeavor. In our Karate school, we create a high achievement atmosphere that will inspire and motivate you or your kids to not only to stay on track but also keep improving.

If you reach black belt level at Tokon Martial Arts, you will have done what many others will never do or accomplish in life. You will not only have a different outlook on life but will carry a “go the extra mile” attitude that will be the most valuable tool in your life and career.

I am sure as soon as you start surrounding yourself with the other students at our Karate school, their high achievement aura and attitude will inspire you too to go the extra mile.
