self-defense

                  Can you defend yourself?

You are probably wondering the rationale behind this question, after all, we no longer live in the Wild West.

Well, you better look at the FBI statistics that are out there to learn that almost every 90 seconds there is a violent crime happening in the USA.

So, I guess we still do live in the Wild West.

In June 2018, Jane Gabrielle, a 23-year-old college student was violently murdered in an alleyway in a mugging gone wrong in the inner-city streets of Chicago. She was walking home with her friends after a night out at the movies when their group of 3 was accosted by some thugs. One of the girls was a college track athlete and was able to highlight her way out of danger, the other was able to fend off her attackers by sheer willpower and some pepper spray. Jane, however, was very unlucky. Defenseless and separated from her friends, her attackers took out their anger on her and violently beat her to death.

The first words emergency responders on the scene said were, “if only she could have defended herself.”

Let me be brutally honest, self-defense is a life skill, and you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to learn some of it, even if it’s the basics at the very least.

One thing that you hear victims say over and over again, all over the world is, “I never thought it could happen to me.” Just last week, a Police helicopter was circling in the sky around my neighborhood.

An 11-year-old boy didn’t return from taking the trash out. Abducted right here in my very own neighborhood in Natomas, Sacramento! What really shook me was the image of his mom driving down the street in her red truck, stopping at my house just as I was putting my two boys into the car. She was devastated and in tears, asking me if I had seen her son, wearing a black hoody.

I could only stand there helplessly and tell her “no.” To be honest, I wanted to cry too as I turned to my 4 and 7-year-old boys and hugged them.

I wish the very same mom had approached me one year earlier, one month earlier, dang it may be even just one week earlier. I could have been able to help her.
